This is a lovely violin probably made by the Grandjon family in Mirecourt towards the end of the 19th Century.  It is a wonderfully elegant copy of an Amati, as stated on the label.  The arching is incredibly attractive and gives the violin a very Amatis style feminine look. The back is of magnificent flamed maple layered with a brilliant orange brown varnish with rich amber yellow undertones. 
 
The tone is exactly as described in Henley's dictionary "stong, with no persuasive quality of sympathy."
